The farmland which became the park was
bought by the
City of St Albans in 1929. It was
developed over the next ten years.
Lakes were dug and trees planted.
The park now has more than 100
acres, and is located just below
St Albans Abbey. It has a
swimming pool, a 9 hole golf course, tennis courts,
an athletics track, and pitch and
putt. These are managed by the Westminster
Lodge
Sports Centre.
There is also the Abbey Theatre,
a children's splash park, the Verulamium
Museum, a pub and a cafe.
The Roman city
of Verulamium, which lies beneath the park
was partially
excavated by Sir Mortimer
and Tessa Wheeler in the 1930s.
Roman city walls can still be seen.
A mosaic floor and
hypocaust are open to the public.
Many of their finds are displayed
in the museum.
